NORTHSIDE NEWS

*IMMEDIATE RELEASE*

CITY OFFICE OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS GRANT

Each year Northside applies to the City of the San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs for a grant for our season of productions. The amount each organization receives is based upon budget earned income and the interview score that an impartial group of volunteers awards each group.

The higher the interview score the more money one receives. Only a few organizations ever receive full funding. Well....this year Northside scored second out of 75 applicants and will be receiving full funding for the amount we could receive. No grant can exceed certain limitations and all is based upon your budgets earned income.

Way to go Northside administration for putting together a great grant that got us $15,000.00. And once again thank you City of San Jose for its continued support of the Arts in the greater San Jose area.

 It's A Play.......

On January 31st, 2009 at 8 PM  Northside, 6 actors and an audience of 50 people sat together for the first time on the planet and listened  to  the new play by Nathan Sanders, Divine Fruit/Kundalini RisingFor all involved the event was an overwhelming success in all areas. So, a special thanks goes out to all who attended, our wonderful group of actors and of course to Nathan Sanders, the author, for making another evening at Northside Theatre an exceptional theatre experience. It was a great way to kick off a new play. All who attended contributed to this new works development and longevity.

Awards for Northside

Each year the WAVE magazine gives the smaller theatre companies awards for outstanding achievement.  And each year Northside has received at least one award. This year for the season of 08-09 we received the award for outstanding comedy for LUV, our closing play of last season.  In 2007-08  Northside placed in three different categories and had several actors mentioned in the "watch for these" categories. We received awards for the following: Best Comedy and Best Costumes for PICASSO, and Best new work for THE SUGAR WITCH, by Nathan Sanders.  We knew we had a really good season last year but it is nice to be recognized for your work publicly.  The awards go to Northside but they really should go to the many, many people that make up Northside.  The authors, the directors, the designers, the administrators, the tech crews, the board, and of course the actors and our audiences......so congrats to us all for the old...and raise your glass to the new!

Northside Creates Film

Northside Theatre Company  has changed its theatre into a small film studio and with a wonderful creative production team has devoted the summer to the creation of  a small movie short written by Nathan Sanders entitled..... SWEET JESUS. The piece is about Inez Fullbright. She has baked a pecan pie that has made front page news. And the story of how the pie came to be is a tale that everyone should hear. It is a  one-act play of Nathan's that we will make into a 29 minute movie short. And if we are successful this movie will then be submitted to various film festivals throughout the U.S. and we will put it up on the web. This is a new experience for all of us but so far the work has been a joy, and I am certain it will be successful. Watch this site for a preview!

Sugar Witch Published

Last season Northside premiered THE SUGAR WITCH in its October 2007 slot. With our excellent team of designers, actors and crews we hailed to great reviews.  Playwright Nathan Sanders played a major role in our production attending many rehearsals and giving our production team insights as to characters, plot and interpretation. As a result, the play was published by Samuel French, Inc. and now the entire world will be able to produce The Sugar Witch, a play that our audiences were the first to view.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Nathan Sanders received the Oppenheimer Award nomination from "New York Newsday" for the "most impressive debut of a new American playwright" for the Off-Broadway production of his first play, "The Sugar Bean Sisters", at the WPA Theatre in New York City. Since that time, the play has been produced at various regional theatres across the country. A staged-reading of Nathan's new play, "Little By Little", was presented in December 2004 at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood. Tony Dow directed an all-star cast that included Meredith Eaton (TV's "Boston Legal") and film legend Piper Laurie ("The Hustler" & "Carrie") and our very own JeannieRae Orlando ("Sweet Jesus"). Nathan's new one-act play, "Sweet Jesus!" recently premiered at Pegasus Theatre in Monte Rio, CA and at the Marsh, "a breeding ground for new performance" in San Francisco. The play was included in the BOA Festival of One-Act Plays at the Eureka Theatre in San Francisco. Upcoming film projects include "American Son", an original screenplay with filmmaker Hamlet Sarkissian and the motion picture adaptations of "The Sugar Bean Sisters" and "Little By Little". Nathan studied playwriting with Howard Stein, Associate Supervisor of the Playwriting Program at the Yale School of Drama. He lives in San Francisco and is an active member of the Dramatists Guild of America.

 More from Nathan Sanders

Hopefully we will be able to produce more of Nathan's plays in the future.
