"Northside Theatre Company, Nathan Sanders and The Arts Council of Silicon Valley join together to bring San Jose ...." THE BIRTH OF A NEW PLAY Just like in life, one of the greatest things that can happen to a theatre company is the birth of a new work. It is an event that needs to be celebrated and enjoyed throughout the entire creative process. It's one thing to take a play and produce it, but it's a far different thing to create something and put it out there for the world to view for the very first time. For a world premier production, opening night brings with it a type of energy that transcends the normal opening night excitements because the audience, the actors, the technicians and designers are all participating in something that will never happen again....a true theatrical debut. It happens once and once only, everything after that has to be qualified. We just wanted you to know that Northside Theatre Company took that wonderfully sacred journey into the world of Nathan Sanders' new play THE SUGAR WITCH.
A New Play The Bean family in Sugar Bean, Florida live under an ancient family curse. The surviving members of the town's founding family have reached the end of their rope. Just when things can't possibly get any worse, tragedy strikes as a mysterious and brutal murder takes place in the Bean family home. The crime places "Charlie" and "Sisser" in grave danger as "Annabelle", the last in a long-line of so-called "Sugar Witches", attempts to end the curse placed on their heads by the dying words of her very own mother. Dark family secrets are revealed and unusual passions are ignited as the family confronts madness, truth and the destructive legacy of racism as the spirits of the dead walk the dark swamp, haunting the hearts of all who reside there. The Sugar Witch is a dark, Southern Gothic play that will linger in the minds of the audience long after the curtain falls.
Nathan Sanders received the Oppenheimer Award nomination from "New York Newsday" for the "most impressive debut of a new American playwright" for the Off-Broadway production of his first play, "The Sugar Bean Sisters", at the WPA Theatre in New York City. Since that time, the play has been produced at various regional theatres across the country. A staged-reading of Nathan's new play, "Little By Little", was presented in December 2004 at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood. Tony Dow directed an all-star cast that included Meredith Eaton (TV's "Boston Legal") and film legend Piper Laurie ("The Hustler" & "Carrie"). Nathan's new one-act play, "Sweet Jesus!" recently premiered at Pegasus Theatre in Monte Rio, CA and at the Marsh, "a breeding ground for new performance" in San Francisco. The play was included in the BOA Festival of One-Act Plays at the Eureka Theatre in San Francisco. Upcoming film projects include "American Son", an original screenplay with filmmaker Hamlet Sarkissian and the motion picture adaptations of "The Sugar Bean Sisters" and "Little By Little". Nathan studied playwriting with Howard Stein, Associate Supervisor of the Playwriting Program at the Yale School of Drama. He lives in San Francisco and is an active member of the Dramatists Guild of America.
